Church of Scientology buying a NASCAR sponsorship

My question is, why do they need to advertise? Shouldn't a religion sell itself? Especially one that has John Travolta believing that when he dies he's going to be transported to an alien planet.

I think John Travolta is actually FROM an alien planet and just wants to go home ;)

I used to love John Travolta. Now he is just too way out there for even me...and that is saying a lot! On my "to do" list is to read a book about Scientology. I just don't understand what it is all about! Apperently, a person can be both a catholic and a scientologist? (I am neither) It just doesn't make sense to me, and I feel like I need to read about it to understand it. Is it a religion? A way of life? I am so confused!

I read an article that Rolling Stone did on Scientology and the whole thing sounds really frightening (and costly) to me.

here's a pretty good article explaining what scientology is in a fairly straightforward manner.

Don't forget to mention Monkey, that Ron Hubbard published a book in the 1950's saying that the best way to get rich was to create your own religeon.
